Chapter Twelve
Two Suns

Without the golden bridges to connect the clouds, their plane of existence would crash to the mortal world. It was forbidden for any god to cross the bridge to another side, less disaster might strike. That is how the gods of the mortal world lived in peace, they stayed on their own turf, not one challenging another.

Amun needed to check on his son, the ruler of Egypt. The only way to do this was to look down at the chasm that the golden bridges created. He gave a deep frown, wondering why his followers believed he had the head of a bird. Why mortals believed in such insanities was beyond his higher mind.

Satisfied with his son’s kingdom, Amun began to rise from his kneeling position when his eyes caught a form on the other side.

She was dressed quite strangely in long white robes. Looking down at his own white cloth that hung from his hips he supposed to her he was strangely dressed as well. Never in all his existence had he ever seen another god looking down at the mortal world.

She had to be a moon goddess because she was very pale. As she rose the robes billowed around her like a blanket. He supposed she was chubby in form for the robes appeared quite…large to him making him fully believe she was indeed a moon goddess. Her black hair fell down her back and followed her form like a tail behind her.

Amun surmised that because she was not of the sun, the rules of gods meeting did not apply.

“Should you not be resting, fair lady?” He asked. Certainly she would be sleeping at the same time as Lah, his hierarchy’s own moon god until it was time for her to rise.

The woman bowed her head in respect.

“If I rest, great lord, then there will be no sun for my own lands.” She replied back.

Amun’s eyes grew wide. “You…You are a goddess of the sun? But…how can this be? You are pale in color.”

A giggle fell from her ruby lips.

“I suppose sun kamis are quite different in many lands…You must be a sun kami.” She noticed his confused look. “Gomen nasai…Kami means god in my language.”

“I see…” Amun turned around. This meeting could not take place any more…They were both gods of the sun! To consort with each other would be—

“Good day to you, Lord Sun.” He stood, turned about to stare at her bowing form. “May your lands shine bright.”

Then she turned and disappeared into her own plane.

This was not the last meeting the two would have. It seemed fate wished them to meet day after day. The two discovered much from each other, including how they came to be. Amun was quite shocked to hear Ameterasu was created after the creator god of her plane bathed in the mortal world. He had been equally shocked to learn that like his children, her children had been chosen to rule the mortals in her hierarchy’s territory.

Days quickly turned into weeks and Amun felt himself wanting to see the sun goddess of the east. Though the other gods in his region were suspicious, they dare not speak a word to him. After all, Amun was higher in rank than most of them.

He sat upon a cloud next to the large chasm that separated his field with hers. On the other side Ameterasu was doing the same.

“I find myself wanting to see you…” Amun blurted out. “That is quite strange to me, this feeling.”

Ameterasu smiled. “Indeed, I have felt the same. Perhaps we have become what mortals call…friends?”

Amun nodded but something inside of him felt…troubled by that word.

“Are friends enemies of sorts?” He asked.

“Oh no, from what I have been told and what I have seen from my mortals, friends are allies.” Ameterasu explained.

Still that feeling never left Amun. Why did he not want to be Ameterasu’s ally? Could it be because they were both of the sun?

“I rather enjoy our talks together, Lord Sun.” Ameterasu’s voice brought him back. “It is rather…comforting to know that I am not the only sun in the sky.”

Amun chuckled at that. He felt the same way.

“I suppose this is what mortals deem as fate…” Amun leaned away, his hands supporting him. “For how strange it is that we look upon our sons at the exact same time? I believe no one in eons has ever done such before.”

“No…I suppose not.” Ameterasu stated.

Their talks were merely talks between two friends. There was no revealing of the other side’s hierarchy, something that was just forbidden to speak of as it was to step into another god’s plane. The two simply sat at the chasm, talking and laughing at the antics of their own mortals.

It was one day when the two met closer than they ever had before. Ameterasu was asked to watch the youngest kami, the kami of childhood, while the other gods convened for a meeting. The child kami raced away from her watcher to the golden bridge. She was nearly across when a pair of tanned hands grabbed her.

“You should not be playing upon this bridge, little one.” Amun was thankful he was there otherwise this child god would have broken a most sacred rule.

He set the child down just as Ameterasu came rushing forward. As she rushed on the bridge to scold the child, she stopped.

For the first time, blue eyes met those of rubies.

It was like a flood, a whirlwind. Neither sun god could fathom the deep beating within their chests as they met at a closer distance for the first time. When their hands met on accident…a spark began.

The two had fallen in love.

Gods fall in love hard and fast due to the fact that love was an emotion gods never felt. Sure there was love for the mortals they watched over, yet the type of love felt between Amun and Ameterasu was something much deeper.

They started to meet on the golden bridge that separated their hierarchies, not wanting to be far away any longer. Ameterasu found Amun’s light to be comforting while Amun believed Ameterasu’s light was glorious in nature.

The gods on either side discovered the visits and forbid the two to see one another. Lost in her anguish of never seeing Amun again, Ameterasu hid herself in a cave, making her lands grow dark without her light. Luckily she was retrieved by her own curiosity.

The gods of her hierarchy couldn’t ignore her foolish action hence they asked her brother to watch over her.

Even under the watchful eyes of the lightening god, Ameterasu still found a way to see Amun. Susanoo knew exactly where his sister was going every other day and didn’t try to stop her. He believed if the gods found out, they would expel her children from the throne and allow Susanoo’s children to take their place. It was better for him if he just kept quiet about it.

Yet nothing could deny his temper at the situation. Tired of having to watch his brat of a sister, Susanno took measures into his own hands. He figured a rivalry between them would curve the insistence of her seeing the other sun kami hence Susanno did everything he could to make Ameterasu believe he hated her. She was wise beyond her years though for even when he threw her own sacred animal into her weaving halls, she simply dismissed the action entirely.

Susanno’s feelings towards his sister soon turned into brotherly concern. His sister was doing something forbidden…This love she felt…Love was a stupid emotion that clouded the mind. He may not like her that much, but the people they watched over needed her light. What would happen if her light was gone?

He had followed her one day, silently watched as she embraced some man with tanned skin. He raised an eyebrow at the closeness between the two. This had gone long enough. Susanno made his way towards the bridge intent on taking his sister back to her weaving halls when he stopped.

The two gods had placed themselves onto the railing. Fearing the worst Susanno raced toward them. What could they be doing?

As he came closer he heard the words they spoke between one another.

“We will find each other…If it takes us lifetimes…we will find one another…” It was the man god that spoke, the sun god known as Amun Ra. Strange he didn’t have a bird’s head like his people believed him to have.

“The gods will never allow us to rest together…” Ameterasu sighed. “But it does not matter to me, I will go on forever if I must…Just to be with you.”

Amun Ra took her hand.

“They will be forced to accept us…I will make sure of that…” He kissed her hand. “A child of ours…I will give him all my power, all my strength.”

She smiled at him. “And I will do the same. A child born of two suns…will set us free.”

“Ameterasu!!!” Susanno shouted but he was too late.

The two had fallen from grace.

Susanno watched as their forms fell towards the mortal world. Why, why would they risk everything like this!? It was insane! He went back and forth on the issue itself. The main concern was that they wished to have offspring. What would happen if two sun gods created life!? Let alone hand over all their powers to that life!? Two lights together did not make a third…It created something much more disturbing.

Darkness…

This one lone disturbing thought fueled Susanoo to jump over the bridge after them. He had to make sure the two would never conceive this child they swore their powers to. If they were to create this child of darkness…

There was no telling what would happen.
